A Mighty Fortress is Our God was published posthumously in 2004 and is truly a 'tour de force' for intermediate and advanced choirs/ensembles. "Out of the Depths" or Aus Tiefer Not, another German chorale by Martin Luther, is heard within this piece. Arranged for 4 to  5 octaves, it has mixed meters, tempo changes, antiphonal phrasing between bass and treble, and utilizes a wide range of dynamics.  The final statement of the melody is accompanied by a chromatic descending bass line which emphatically states the title and draws the listener to a sharper perspective of the magnitude of our Creator.
